It is also the start of the West Highland Railway – regarded as one of the finest journeys in the world as it passes over the spectacular Glenfinnan Viaduct to Mallaig.

Group Breaks to the Western Highlands and Islands

Discover the Commando Memorial at Spean Bridge, a memorial amid the original commando training grounds, and the Caledonian Canal as it passes into Loch Ness. Explore the wild Rannoch Moor and the genteel Glen of Glencoe, probably the most spectacular in Scotland, or the more gentle hills and inlets of Argyll, reaching towards the Firth of Clyde.

Further south and Oban has become one the major holiday centres in the West Highlands with its superb level promenade, whisky distillery and woollen mills, and Pulpit Hill with wonderful views across the Firth of Lorne. Take the ferries from Oban and explore the small nearby island of Kerrara and the Isle of Mull and Iona – birthplace of Christianity in Scotland and burial place of fifty-nine kings.
