Europe

It is difficult to know where to begin when covering the history of Europe, as it has such a rich and distinctive past. Many events have shaped the continent, and a great deal of its historical sites are now tourist attractions, from medieval castles and palaces to ancient monuments, and to sombre concentration camps that are a reminder of hard fought wars.

The ancient Acropolis of Athens, home to the world famous, Parthenon and Theatre of Dionysius, is thought to be 2,400 years old and is a huge attraction for Greek mythology and history fans, while the Berlin Wall remains a symbol of liberation. And the city of Pompeii, frozen under a thick blanket of volcanic ash, is one of the most important archaeological sites in the world.
