Brecon Beacons Mountain Railway
One of the best ways to view Wales is by train and the Brecon Mountain Railway showcases the very best of the dramatic South Wales landscape. Based on the Brecon and Merthyr Railway, which originally opened in the mid-1800s, this is one of the most popular tracks in Wales, with impressively restored steam locomotives travelling to the heart of the Brecon Beacons National Park, taking you through Pontsticill and along the full length of the Taf Fechan Reservoir, before climbing to Torpantau, which was the summit of the original line.
Welshpool and Llanfair Light Railway
This lovingly restored narrow gauge steam railway first opened in 1903 to link the market town of Welshpool to the rural community of Llanfair Caereinion. It is now a popular tourist attraction, taking in the best of the mid Wales countryside as it heads up the steepest gradients in Britain.
Vale of Rheidol Railway
Enjoy a scenic trip on the Vale of Rheidol Railway to see the best of Wales’s everchanging scenery. First opened in 1902, the restored steam trains recreate the Edwardian spirit of adventure, as you travel past open meadows, ancient woodlands and the rugged rocky terrain of the stunning Cambrian Mountains on the twelve mile journey between Devil’s Bridge, home of the famous waterfalls, and the seaside resort of Aberystwyth.
